Bryan Singer Comes Back for ‘X-Men: First Class’ (Interview)

Heat Vision: So how did you end up coming back to “X-Men”?Bryan Singer: It started with a conversation between (Fox co-chairman) Tom Rothman and I some time ago. We not only concluded a deal, but I’ve written a pretty concise treatment. There’s a story that I really want to tell.

Heat Vision: What is the story?Singer: I can’t tell you that; it’s secret. But it’s basically about the formation of the X-Men. How they began and the relationship between a young Xavier and a young Magneto.

Heat Vision: I remember when you left “X3″ to do “Superman Returns.” It wasn’t under the best of circumstances.Singer: A lot of that was comical and exaggerated. When you set up a rather lucrative franchise and produce one of the company’s biggest television shows (“House”), I think there is a lot of good energy on a business level. But also, Tom Rothman and I have a very strong relationship from those early days of “X-Men 1″ when he ascended to the chairmanship and I was involved in this very important movie for the studio. We bonded then. So I think he was frustrated then, as was I, because I couldn’t do a third “X-Men,” but that moment of frustration passed. We have always looked at different projects to do together, but the timing was never right to do something like this. But now, it’s been about 10 years since the first “X-Men,” and this is a nice opportunity to look back at the origins of that universe.

Heat Vision: Do you think the X-Men can exhaust themselves? You’ve got the original three, you’ve got “Wolverine,” you’ve got a “Deadpool” and “Magneto” in the works …Singer: This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust. But no, I don’t see an exhaustion. The X-Men universe is boundless. These are great characters. And as young characters, they are quite different than the characters we have seen in the contemporary movies.

Heat Vision: Would you do “Jack the Giant Killer” first?Singer: Right now that is the plan. Unless there’s a problem in the development process. There is a script for “Jack”; we’re in visual development. We’ve got artwork and pre-viz that we are doing. But you never know how things go. I have a writer named Jamie Moss working on “First Class.”

Heat Vision: Why did you choose to work with him?Singer: He’s a really good writer, and of the writers I met with, he interpreted my story the best and brought the most to it. Because I’m so actively involved in the script development of my movies, I’m very hands-on, I need a certain kind of writer and a certain kind of availability to me. And he fit that bill. He’s quite talented.

Short Jennifer Lawrence quote

"X-Men" is going great. We're now in Georgia doing all the battle sequences, so that's fun. To be honest, when I wrap I'm mostly focused on sleeping or eating. So I haven't been too focused on what's next — I'm mostly just focused on sleeping and eating.""

Kevin Bacon discusses Sebastian Shaw

In an interview with Philadelphia Style, Kevin Bacon confirmed that he will play a significant role in X-Men: First Class as the villain, Sebastian Shaw.  But don't expect him to jump through buildings or get engaged in hand-to-hand combat, Bacon admits that the role won't be very physically demanding.  Says Bacon, "I'll let the younger actors do that...I'm more one of those 'sit in my chair and destroy the world' type of guys."

Jennifer Lawrence On Mystique

Assignment X (AX) interviewed Jennifer Lawrence, and part of the interview concerns her role as Mystique.

AX: A lot of people are excited about seeing you play Mystique in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS next year. She’s probably my favorite character. What’s it like going through that body paint job that Rebecca Romijn previously endured?

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: For most of the movie, I’m “me” as Raven Darkholme. This is before she’s a mutant and proud as Mystique. In FIRST CLASS, Raven’s more of an insecure teenager who’s dealing with the insecurity that she’s blue and scaly. Then she learns to start embracing it. For that, I went through the body paint many times. It’s six to eight hours to put on. And it would be hell if it wasn’t for my makeup girls. We just have so much fun watching SEX AND THE CITY the whole time. The only problem is that when I’m done standing up or sitting on a bicycle seat for so many hours, I’m ready to go home, but I’ve got to start work right away.

AX: Is it liberating playing an empowered character who’s literally naked to the world?

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: I definitely have gotten used to walking around in my skivvies. I don’t know if that gave me empowerment as much as it took all of my modesty away!

AX: Mystique’s appeal is how she uses her sensuality as a weapon. What’s your personal take on the character?

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: In a sense, Rebecca Romijn and I are playing two different Mystiques. Her version is comfortable, and badass in her own skin, but my Raven is about figuring herself out, and wondering if it would be better to remain in her natural form.

AX: So I imagine we’ll have a scene with Raven’s liberating moment of ripping her cloths off?

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: I don’t know. Stay tuned!

AX: Another great quality about Mystique is her agility. What are the physical demands of the part like?

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: All of the cast that are playing X-Men are all going through training. I personally trained for two hours a day, except when I was being body painted. I did kick boxing, stretching and yoga, but it’s really my stunt girl who’s going to be doing more than me.

AX: One of my favorite films of the year was Class director Matthew Vaughan’s KICK ASS. Is he going for a similarly satirical tone here, or will his X-MEN be more serious?

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: Matthew’s an incredible director. He’s very smart, and has a cool style. While I don’t think he’s trying to be too serious here, he’s also not making the film jokey. About the only word that comes to mind when you’re looking around the set to get a feeling for what this film will be is “Cool!” I definitely trust in Matthew.

Rebecca Romijn as Mystique

Official Plot Description

X-Men First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time.

Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”

He met Mystique in Germany, she fell in love with Azazel, and she became pregnant with Azazel's son, Nightcrawler. What is "A Touch of Brimstone"?

The Hellfire Club as featured in the X-Men comics was strongly influenced by a 1966 episode of the British TV series "The Avengers" - A Touch of Brimstone. In the episode John Steed and Emma Peel infiltrate the Hellfire Club who are attempting to take over the world. They dress in the same style of vintage costumes that the X-Men Hellfire Club do.

What is the Hellfire Club?

The Hellfire Club is an underground society that often comes into conflict the X-Men. Although the Club appears to merely be an international social club for wealthy elites, its clandestine Inner Circle seeks to influence world events to their own agenda. Created by the Uncanny X-Men writer/artist duo of Chris Claremont and John Byrne, they were heavily influenced by a 1966 episode of the British television series The Avengers ("A Touch of Brimstone").

The hierarchy of the Inner Circle is modeled on the pieces of a chess set, with Black and White sets of Kings, Queens, Bishops and Rooks.

The Hellfire Club and its Inner Circle were introduced in the Dark Phoenix Saga, this incarnation, composed most notably of Black King Sebastian Shaw and White Queen Emma Frost, would remain prominent for many years. After their initial confrontations, the Hellfire Club and the X-Men settled into an uneasy alliance.

X-Men: First Class Plot Details (Possible Spoilers)

Bleeding Cool has learned that X-Men: First Class will include a scene identical to the opening shot of the first X-Men movie, where a young Eric Lensherr, a.k.a. Magneto, is being taken away from his family by Nazis and exhibits his powers for the first time. According to the report, the scene will be remade almost shot-for-shot, though there will be some key differences, namely Bill Milner playing the role of "Young Eric Lensherr" and "some very dramatic twists" towards the end of the scene. The article doesn't mention where in the film the sequence will be featured, be it in the very beginning or as a flashback.

X-Men: First Class Plot Details

Bryan Singer spoke about the film, seeking to clarify what exactly is being done with everyone's favorite band of merry mutants. First off, the film is set in the 1960s. JFK is the president, the Civil Rights movement is in full swing, and "there is a spirit of a hopeful future that was prevalent in that time." Charles Xavier and the man who will become Magneto -- Erik Lehnsherr -- meet and dream of a future where man and mutant can live together in peace. And we all know how that works out…

Some bullet points follow on the ton of info that Singer has revealed:

--The two leads will be in their late twenties.
--Xavier will not be in his wheelchair, but we will learn how he gets there.
--He'll also still have hair.
--Xavier and Magneto will create the X-Men together.
--This is not based on the comic book called First Class but rather is "a new beginning" for the series.
--Director Matthew Vaughn is "technologically inspired" by the James Bond tech of the '60s.
--The costumes will be more "comic bookish" than in previous films.
--Neither Cyclops nor Marvel Girl will show up, but Cyke's brother Havoc will.
--Kevin Bacon will play Sebastian Shaw and, yes, the Hellfire Club will figure into the mix.
--Filming begins with Xavier at Oxford University.
--The movie will have a much more international feel than previous installments. (The shoot will take place in England and the U.S.) Other locations will include Russia (though they won't actually film there).

'X-Men: First Class' Adds Ray Wise To Cast

During an interview with IGN, "Twin Peaks" and "24" actor Ray Wise confirmed that he'll appear in the currently shooting "X-Men" prequel. According to Wise, the well-established genre actor will begin shooting his role in "First Class" in just a few short weeks.

"I'm playing the Secretary of State of the United States," said Wise of his character. "I'll be going over [to the film's London set] in the next couple of weeks."

But even though his character is bogged down in politics, Wise expects that he's going to be involved in plenty of scenes with huge special effects and elaborate mutant powers. "Well, I think I touch on them," he confirmed. "Yeah, a bit."

Although Wise remained quiet on the specifics of his character, he was quite vocal about his support for the superhero movie's enormous and impressive cast and crew.

"I love Matthew," Wise said of his director. "And Bryan Singer's producing it and [it's got] a great cast — James McAvoy, January Jones, Oliver Platt."
